General Information

Protection of environment is essential to the quality of life of the present and future generations. The challenge is to combine it with a permanent and lasting economic growth. The climate change is only making this challenge bigger. The environmental policy of the European Union is based on the conviction that stringent environmental norms can form a stimulus for innovation and can offer new opportunities for business. Furthermore, the environmental policy has to be interwoven with economic, social and industrial policies. Europeans consider their environment quite important. Euro barometer polls show that a large majority (more than 70%) wants policy makers to balance environmental policy with economic and social policies. As individuals, Europeans are ready to support environmental policy but they would do more if they have better information about environmental options that costs little or nothing. They would also do more if they would be convinced that their co-citizens would do the same. Strongly believing in this, Cosmicus wants to make the young generation more conscious of its contribution to the environment by introducing simple practical scientific educational projects. The international Olympics will be the stage for this future generation where while learning through practice their knowledge and love for science contributes to environmental issues. The data shows us negative effects of human actions on mother-earth and unless we turn this trend around, it could all go wrong.

Cosmicus dedicates itself to passing environmental education on to the youth. By organizing the Olympics we want to give the youth a chance to deepen their knowledge of environmental problems through sharing their know-how with people of their own age in an international milieu. Through presentation of team-developed projects based on practical applications, the youth will get better acquainted with the topic and will become convinced of the seriousness of the situation. We are convinced that forging awareness of this situation by using the two-prong approach is attainable, while acquiring theoretical insight through information only, leads to few results and is consequently of inadequate impact. This also applies to lessons at school.
